What is a Pie Chart?

A Pie Chart is a circular graph that is divided into sections that are proportional to the data they represent. It gets its name from its appearance, which resembles a pie that has been cut into different sized slices. After data collection the next step is to assess how the child wants to represent this data. How the best method they should use is to look at their categories, when there are six or more categories generally it would be better for them to use a bar chart or similar because when you create a pie chart with too many sections it becomes trickier to visually identify the size difference in the pie sections.

Let’s look at some example data and investigate how it would be represented in a pie chart.

A class of 24 were asked what their favourite fruit is or if they didn’t like fruit at all. Here are the findings. This same data represented in a pie chart would look like this.
